What is Garden Enhanced Nutrition Education (GENE)?

GENE is a research-based approach to nutrition education that incorporates growing, harvesting, and tasting garden-grown produce to increase:

  • Nutrition knowledge
  • Preferences for certain vegetables

This image at above right was used in the training given by UC Davis and Life Lab as part of a Specialty Crop Block Grant from CDFA. It outlines the three overlapping components of GENE:

  • Hands on Gardening
  • Nutrition Concepts
  • Edible Activities

The NCOE Farm-to-School Grant awarded in 2019 added Physical Activity through the use of the JMG Learn, Grow, Eat, Go (LGEG) Curriculum.

French Fries and the Food System (Middle/High)

This agricultural curriculum features powerful, original lessons written and developed by The Food Project’s growers and educators. Organized by season, the materials teach youth how to develop a deep understanding of and appreciation for the land and local food systems. Lessons can be done both indoors and outdoors and can be easily adapted by instructors working in school-based plots, urban food lots, and environmental education programs.
